TOWN HALL FOR DUNEDIN.
At the City Council’s meeting on the 21at, Councillor Walter moved, “That this Council confer with his Honor the Superintendent, and the University Committee, with a view of the Otago University, and that the iflbg Councillors be formed into a consider into the subject, and Council thereon :—Councillors Reeves, Prosser, Ramsay, and the mover.” Councillor Walter said he had had a conversation with the Superintendent on the above subject, and from what he had said, he was led to believe that the University Buildings could be obtained by the Corporation. It would, with some little alteration, suit the Corporation admirably. The site could not be surpassed. If they could, get it, there was no doubt that a sum of expended on it would make it all they could desire. The Dowling street and other sites could be leased, and bring them in a revenue. He was much obliged to Councillor Reeves for having withdrawn his motion on the subject of Dowling street in favor of the one which he had just read.—Councillor Prosser seconded the motion, on condition that the following words were added—“and that the committee which has been named shall be empowered to visit the Hall, and take such opinion as they may deem necessary, in order to see if it is suitable for the purposes of a Town Hall.” If the Hall could be enlarged so as to hold several thousand people, then it would be a most desirable building. He considered the committee should get competent advice on the subject, however, before bringing up their report.—The motion was unanimously agreed to.
