THE WESTERN STAR. (PUBLISHED WEEKLY.) SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1874.
PebhapS that mysterious entity ’commonly designated in newspaper paragraphs as “ the powers that be ” will kindly explain on what principle the people of the Western District were strictly excluded from tendering for certain works to be executed in the immediate vicinity of the town of Riverton. No intimation of the fact that such works were to be executed was given in the local press; but three or four days before the time for the reception of tenders expired, an advertisement appeared in an. Invercargill paper asking for offers to perform certain works. In that advertisement it was notified that plans and specifications were to be seen at Invercargill, and tenders were also to be sent to that city of magnificent disappointment. Is his Honor the Superintendent and the Provincial Executive aware of this? It is within our knowledge that half a dozen contractors were, by this hole and corner way of doing things, debarred from tendering. Wo quietly await some explanation.
