Dunedin, Friday. A junction between the Clutha and Port Chalmers lines has been effected. A train with the Hons. Messrs. Richardson and Reynolds, and the Superintendent proceeded this afternoon from the Port to the Chain Hills tunnel. The licensing difficulty is not to be got over. The Hon. Dr. Pollen telegraphs that he cannot advise or assist the magistrates. “Major Richardson hasjjresigued his seat in the Provincial Council on the ground that Mr. Reid would not accept office when he had a majority. Mr. Henderson is a candidate for the vacancy. The Governor telegraphs that he will be in Dunedin on the 22nd instant, and will stay for a month, then proceeding overland to Invercargill. He does not desire processions. Mr. Maitland’s report says that there was no foundation for the charge against the head master of the Tokomairiro School by Father Coleman. Father Coleman, in the “ Tablet,” charges the Benevolent Asylum with proselytising Roman Catholic children. CABLEGRAMS. The Omeo, which arrived at the Bluff from Melbourne last night, brings the following news by Anglo-Australian cable : London, 20th November. Mr. James Harrison read a paper before the Society of Arts on his process of freezing meat, and explained the failure of the experiment on board tha Norfolk. Professor Gamgee questioned the possibility of making it a commercial success owing to the cos£ involved. The corn market is strong with an upward tendency,
; 23rd November. Disraeli is installed Lord Rector of the Glasgow University. Coals are declining. It has been found that the friendly Fantees were unreliable, and reinforcements of two thousand men have been despatched ,to the West Coast of Africa. Further bush fighting has taken place between the British troops and the Ashantees. Paris, 23rd November. The Assembly has prolonged M'Mahon’s powers as President for seven years. New York, 23rd November. The indignation in America respecting the Cuban affair is moderating. Bombay, 23rd November. There is a rice famine in Bengal. London, 25th November. Parliament re-assembes on the sth February. America demands the surrender of the survivors of the Yirginian expedition to Cuba ; also an apology and indemnification to be paid to the relatives of the slain, as well as punishment of the executioners ; and also urges the abolition of slavery. Spain’s answer is friendly, and denies execution of British subjects. Paris, 26th November. A change has been made in the French Minis-' try. The Due de Broglie resigns the portfolio of Foreign Affairs, and accepts the office of Minister of the Interior —vice Yento, resigned. The Due Decares, ambassador to London, succeeds as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Madrid, 26th November. A military plot for the surrrender of Carthagena has been discovered.
