THE COMMUNIST’S LETTER.
TO THE EDITOR. , Sir, —In introducing yourself to tlie public in your first issue, you announced that tbe policy of The Western Star would be to “promote moral, social, and material welfare in this district.” Those are noble sentiments : have they been adhered to even in the first issue ? I think not; as I believe the editor of a newspaper is as responsible for the selection of reading matter as that produced by his pen. If this be true, allow me to ask three questions ; —First—Was the letter of “ Communist Prisoner” to the London “ Echo ” —and reproduced by you —done for the edification of the people of this district ? Second —Is such reproductions as referred.to calculated'.to produce morality? Third—Could that letter have been written by the author for any other purpose than to pander to the beastly appetites of his fellow Communists, and others of the same stamp ? I think that any person who has read of their wretched doings in Paris, ought to treat them as they would a cesspool, that is, leave them undisturbed. If a cesspool is left undisturbed, and allowed to cover itself with a rank vegetation, its presence might be tolerated; but when its impurities is continually stirred and brought to the surface, it becomes such a nuisance as to be absolutely intolerable. Do not stir up the wretched history of their past, as the effluvia would taint our moral atmosphere ; let the grass grow over them and every right-minded man, no doubt, will endeavour to forget that such miserable wretches was ever in in existence. For my own part, I could read anything you could produce in English —no matter how immoral —without making the slightest alteration on me, as my character is formed—whether it is for good or evil; but I decidedly object to put such a production as the Communist letter referred to in the hands of my children. —yours, &c., Charles Quin. Lissau Plain, 17th November, 1873. [Mr.. Quin’s ideas of morality are beyond our comprehension. — Ed.] The Government of British Columbia is offering 250 acres of land for nothing to immigrants.
