RIVERTON TOWN COUNCIL.

An adjourned meeting of the Riverton Town Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present—his Worship the Mayor (Mr. JJ?. McDonald), Councillors Instone, Murehle, Muls, Reid, and Beer.< . The minutes of previous meetings were read and c Diifirmed, and the outward correspondence approved. The inward correspondence was received. It consisted of two letters from the Provincial .Under-Secretary, and one from the Provincial Solicitor. ' One of the Under-Secretary’s communications announced the forwarding of leases of' municipal reserves signed by his Honor in favour of Messrs Daniel, Cassels, Wintoh, Mills, and Cassels; and the other contained the information that the amount expended by the Council on the wharf—£ll 14s. 4d.—woxdd be paid into the National Bank to its credit by the Pi’ovincial Government. Mr. Turton’s letter acknowledged the receipt of £2 13s. 4d., fees for perusing leases. A discussion ensued relative to the Powder Magazine. It appeared that the Council had requested the Grovernment to erect a powder magazine. The Government, however, declined to do so, but recommended the Council to construct the necessary building. This the Council did, in April last, adopted a scale of fees and called for tenders for the lease of the magazine-. Messrs. Wluttingham Bros, and Instbiie were the successful tenderers. On the Superintendent receiving a copy of the scale agreed to by the Council, he forwarded the Dunedin scale of charges, with an intimation that the Council could charge 20 per cent, in addition thereto, but no more; Upon the receipt of this information, Messrs Wluttingham Bros, and Instone. declined to have anything to do with the magazine, and the matter has remained in abeyance ever since. It was felt generally by Councillors that the Council, having gone to the expense of erecting the builtilag, should have the right of fixing the scale of charges. Finally, Or. Mills moved “That the former scale of charges be adhered to, and that tenders be called for the lease of the magazine for twelve months.” Cr. Murchie seconded the motion, and it was carried; Cr. Reid presented the report of the Public Works Committee relative to _ works required to be undertaken, which was adopted.
