FATE OF MAREO
Some Likelihood of Further Trial CONFERENCE WITH MINISTER (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, Last Night. The likelihood of a further trial fof Eric Mareo is being discussed. Mr K. C. Aekins, Mareo’s solicitor at Auckland, who with Mr H. F. O’Leary as leading counsel conducted his defence, had la conference with the Minister of Justice to-day and returned to Auckland to-night. The Minister made no comment when interviewed.
Mr O’Leary, who was out of town to-day, .stated that he could say nothing until he heard from Mr Aekins. Such an application for leave to apply for a new trial would come before Mr Justice Callan and would probably bei referred to the Court of Appeal, as was the case after the first trial. The probable ground for the application would be that the verdict was (allegedly against the weight of the evidence, particularly of the. new evidence adduced at the second trial.
