“Canned Music”

“People are getting very tired of canned music.” said Mr R. J. Young, at the annual meeting of the Masterton Orchestra Society recently. 4 ‘There is a general feeling in evidence everywhere ’hat flesh and blood music is coming back into its own.” “Hard Things Said” Air Ben Roberts M.P. (Wairarapa), during the course of his address at the Labour Picnic at Tauherenikau Racecourse on Sunday, said: “A ■word for my old friend, the Hon. R. Semple. Hard things are said of him because he says hard things. However, he is human beneath it all and . of a kindly nature, too. If he says hard things, they are deserved.” Ewe Fair At the Waipukurau ewe fair tomorrow the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Helping Counties Important changes in the control of highways throughout the Dominion were' foreshadowed by the Minister of Public Works (Hon. It. Semple) in the course of a reply to a deputation which waited on him in Foxton recently, the Minister intimating that Parliament would be asked to consider legislation in this direction at the coming session. ‘‘l am not going to be stopped by petty jealousies and humbugs; they will have to step on it to stop me,” the Minister concluded. The Takapau Sports At a meeting of the directors of ■the Takapau Caledonian Society held on Wednesday morning it was decided, owing to the wet and unfavourable weather, to postpone the annual sports till Thursday, March 12. the day following the Makotuku sports. The secretary, Air N. Tilley, will accept further entries. Owing to the extra trouble and cost in having to change the date of the sports it is hoped that the public will accord their usual support and help the society. Metal in Cow’s Stomach. The municipal abattoir at Waihi has a curious exhibit, which was ' found in the stomach of a cow killed recently. It consists of a piece of steel nearly 11b in weight, 7§in in length, slightly over an inch wide, and rather more than a quarter of an inch thick, with round holes bored in it. The piece of metal was found in the middle, or second, stomach of the animal. The inspector of abattoirs states that during the whole of his experience he has never known anything of so formidable a nature to be found in the stomach of an animal, although it is not unusual to find pieces of boots, bits of wire and staples. ■Highways and Other Roads. The Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union discussed a Alanawatu and Dairy Farmers’ Union remit in regard to main highways and other roads, and carried the remit in the following form: ■—“That this executive urges the Government to take over all main highways and also to take over loans raised by the county councils to build them.” The executive also adopted a North Taranaki remit “protesting against public money being squandered on grades and bends on main roads when there are so many unmetalled roads which require attention.”
