DIETS TO GET JOB

TEACHER FAILS TOO HEAVY FOR EMPLOYERS NEW YORK, Jan. 6. Miss Rose Freistater, American school teacher, sft 2in tall, has been refused a license to teach in New York because she weighs 12st 131 b. The Board of Examiners of the New York City Board of Education state that their requirements as to weight and physical fitness are those adopted by insurance companies for standard risks. These requirements, they hold, are reasonable in view of the insurance aspects of the teachers* retirement system. “Teachers should, moreover, be acceptable models for their pupils in the matter of weight,” the board adds, in answer to her appeal. Miss Freistater applied for the license in March, 1931. The board agreed to issue the license if she could reduce her weight from the 13st which she then weighed to lOst 101 b within six months.

At the end of six months ipe said she weighed list 61b, and asked for another month in which to get her weight down to lOst 101 b. Her, mother, she said, had been ill, and she had had to devote so much time to her that she had been unable to diet wholeheartedly. Her request was refused. She appealed. She said that while training, and as permanent substitute teacher at James Monroe High School, she had not missed a day in four years. The Board of Examiners, in refusing her appeal, states that Miss FreiBtater now weighed 12st 131 b, only, lib less than in 1931, which substantiated the original opinion of the physician who had examined her that any reduction in weight would be only temporary.
