Reduced Railway Fares
In to-day’s issue the Railway Department advertises cheap fares, and train arrangements, in connection with the races at Hastings on January 1 and 2. No Late Night’s Shopping
Retail establishments are to be closed at 5.30 p.m. this evening, but . will remain open till 10 o’clock on , New Year's Eve. Holidays are to be 4 observed on Wednesday and Thurs- J day of next week in honour of the New Year. On Saturday next early closing will again operate, similarly to this week. Pukeora Sanatorium Applications, closing on January 20, are being invited by the Waipawa Hospital Board, for the position of Medical Superintendent at Pukeora Sanatorium. The commencing salary for this position is £750 per annum, with free residence. Waipawa Bowlers’ Success
A Waipawa rink comprising J. Walker, Cossar, Fraser and S. Dailey, competed at the Heretaunga Bowling Club’s one-day tournament on Thursday, securing four wins out of six games. Nutter (Hastings) won B section with six wins and no losses, and Parkinson was top of A section with five wins.
Farmer’s Fatal Fall
Mr Robert Whytock, aged 45, farmer, of Milton, was killed instantan? eously on Thursday afternoon through falling off a load of hay. He/ was working on the top of a loaded dray, and as the horse moved forward he evidently lost his balance and fell heavily on his head. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest to-day. Mr Whytock was a married man with a family of five. St. John Ambulance
At the Waipukurau Jockey Club’s summer meeting on Boxing Day the Waipawa branch of the St. John Ambulance Association was represented by Messrs W. E. Yates, E. R. Hutchings, and J. Bosely, all in uniform, this being their second appearance in the new outfit. Fortunately there were no mishaps on the course, but like the British Navy the Association aims to be ready for any emergency as to rendering service.
Expression of Gratitude! Three small boys found a handbag on the Marine Parade, Napier, after the ceremonies on Boxing Night and gave it to a policeman. Shortly afterwards a woman inquired for it from the same policemanV, and the bag, containing a gold wrist-
let watch, a roll of notes, and some small change, was returned to her. The policeman pointed out the boys to her, whereupon she generously rewarded them with twopence!
Mother of Eight Kittens
The proudest cat in Napier yes terday was Pinto, a feline which belongs to the mechanical staff of the Telephone Exchange. She has become the mother of eight kittens, all of which are reported to be doing well. The staff of the exchange are delighted with this Christmas box, and are searching to ascertain whether a. family of eight in the feline world constitutes a record. Brisk Business The brisk condition of the motor industry this year has been demonstrated by the large number of ownership changes notified to th» motor registration branch of ifie Post Office. The Registrar a total of 7,821 during the month of November. This shows that the volume of turnover in car business is being well maintained. Previous monthly figures, starting with the record period of May last when there were 11,680 notifications of change of ownership, are as follow: June, 6.969; July, 9,405; August, 8,087; September. 7,611; October. 7.747; November, 7,821. Compared with the corresponding seven months of 1934, the notifications of changed ownership detailed above represent an increase of 37 per cent.
