LABOUR LEADER

CONFIDENT OF VICTORY

ENTHUSIASM AT AUCKLAND

(Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, Last Night.

There were scenes of wild enthusiasm at the Town Hall, when a vast audience composed mainly of Labour supporters gathered to hear the final address of the election campaign by the Leader of the Labour Party, Mr. M. J. Savage. The Leader was cheered and applauded at frequent points in the course of his address and at the conclusion the crowd stood and sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” The Town Hall was crowded long before eight o’clock and many who . sought admission had to be turned away. However, loud speakers enabled those in the streets outside to hear the address, which was given without interruption except that caused by repeated appaluse. There were deafening cheers when Mr. Savage rose to speak. “I thank you for the very inspiring welcome you have given me,” he said, and apologised for the state of his voice, which had suffered as the result of the long campaign. When Mr. Savage added that it was delightful to meet such an audience' and without admission by ticket, he was stopped for some moments by the laughter and cheers. Later Mr. Savage said he liked the chances of the Labour Party better than those of any other party and it was his candid opinion that Labour was going to be the next Government.

Many Labour candidates who had been speaking in various parts of the city and suburbs arrived and were given a rousing reception. Rev. A. J. Greenwood moved: “That this meeting thank Mr. Savage for his statesmanlike address and those present pledge themselves in support the Labour candidates with the conviction that the next Government, for the first time in the history of New Zealand, would be entrusted to Labour and that Mr. Savage would be Prime Minister.”

The motion was carried with applause and cheers that amounted to a roar, and when this died down one lone voice was heard in dissent. The people then rose and cheered.
