Persons walking in the Dingle Reserve .at St. Holi'ers Bay, Auckland, were attracted by an unusual din of bird chatter (states the, “New Zealand Herald”). On investigation of a thicket no fewer than nine blackbirds were discovered mobbing a morepork. The owl appeared quite indifferent to the turmoil, but the milling blackbirds! took the precaution of keeping well out of reach of his useful beak and talons. Red Cross Society

The Waipukurau and District Red Cross Committee met in the Salvation Army rooms on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs E. D. Rice persided, the following members being present:—Mesdames W. Chambers, J. Hobson, F. H. Hop- , kitaison, H. De Lacey. F. E. Mcßoberts, W. C. Smith, Mises Burdett, H. Hunter and the secretary. Apologies were tendered from Mrs Paul Hunter and Miss M. Simmons. A large amount of routine business was dealt with. Matron Inglis’is report on Red Cross activities on behalf of the patients in the sanatorium was read and proved most satisfactory, the interest in the wbrk being well maintained. Mrs F. H. Hopkinson, Red Cross visitor to the public hospital, reported that she had visited the hospital every week nnd taken comforts to the patients. Letters of appreciation were received from patients in the sanatorium thanking the society for services rendered. The usual 1 isJaniatorium Christmas fete was discussed and it was decided to call a public. meeting, to be held on the first Thursday in December, when final arrangemlents will 15e mjajde. Account® amounting to £l6 8/4 were passed flor payment.
