The Cost of Education.
“Talk about the cost of education which ignores the effect of it on character and intelligence and physical well-being, on the output of industry and. the amenity of social life, is as rational as a discussion of one side of the balance sheet without reference to the other.” —Professor R. H. Tawney. Conduct in Court. The inexperience of defendants in Court cases have often led to amused smiles from those who are familiar with all the niceties of such behaviour. Nervousness is often responsible for several faux pas, notably a hesitation to take advantage of the facility of asking questions of witnesses when such questions would mean a probable advantage to their side of the case. Several times the Christchurch Court orderly had to ask defendants to take their hand out of their pockets, and one man who answered the charge through a mouthful of what might have been stickjawette was told sharply to “Have his breakfast at home, and not in Court.’ ’
