N.Z. RUGBY TOURISTS

FIRST TEST MATCH

STRONG SCOTTISH SIDE

By Telegraph —Copyright,—Press Assn LONDON, Nov. 20.

There are no real surprises in Scotland’s team for the first international match against the All Blacks, though a number would prefer Lind instead of Dick. The latter made seme nice runs in the London Counties game', yet showed a tendency to hang on and 'o neglect hi., wingers. Scotland’s pack is of the lively terrier type in the loose and a good scrummaging unit.

The tourists regard Beatte as one of '■he b st forwards in Britain. It is largely a South-of-ScoH *d pack, Lambie previously playing for Hawick. There should be understanding between the forw-ards. Waters has a great reputation; he is of the burly.

fiery type. The Scottish inside backs are particularly able, with plenty of pace. The tourists have the greatest respect for Shaw. Logan has shown good form this season. New Zealand

cannot afford to give Shaw any room. There is little doubt that he will be

■losely watched by Griffiths, who is a good, resolute defender. Everything points to an exciting, strenuous and even game. The visitors’ fine combination and back-

ing-up, especially now that the forwards are scrummaging well, should carry the day. On the form displayed against them, the New Zealanders consider Scotland stronger than Wales or England. Last season the Scottish selectors staged what was virtually an experimental season, and they were quite successful in their venture, for they eventually succeeded in fielding a good, strong team. This team-build-ing naturally had its effect on the successes of the teams, but though Scotland finished last in its international matches, it is generally accepted that had Scotland the same team for its first two international games as it had for its final match the championship table would have been altogether different. Actually Scotland presented Ireland with the championship, for in their final game they defeated England. Actually Scotland ran Wales and Ireland very close, the former winning only by a penalty goal and the latter by 12—5.
