IN EXPLANATION

NATIONAL CANDIDATURES

MR. JULL AND MR. ORMOND

It is reported that at his meeting in Waipawa last night the Independent National candidate for the Waipawa Seat (Mr. J. D. Ormond, Junr.) referred to a” letter he had received from the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates in respect of statements said to have been made to the effect that he (Mr. Coates) was officially supporting Mr. Jull, but personally favouring Mr. Ormond’s candidature, and stated that this letter had been received on the 13th inst., the day after the closing of nominations. In conversation with the Member for the District today, the information was elicited that Mr. Jull had also received a copy of this letter, and as Mr. Coates desires that full publicity be given to the matter at issue he has handed the copy to the “Press” for publication: Dargaville, November 11, 1935. My dear Ormond, Within the last day or two many communications by letter and telephone have reached me asking my position concerning the contest in Waipawa. It is stated by friends of mine that officially I am supporting Mr. Jull, the official Government candidate, but personally I am supporting you. You will be the first to realise how misleading and incorrect is such a statement. Will you please take an early opportunity of putting the matter right with your electors? I have been greatly concerned with the possibility of vote splitting in the Waipawa Electorate and, at the risk of being once more unpleasant, would appeal to you to make the position safe by yourself withdrawing ' from the contest and throwing in your weight with the Government. Long ago I decided not to worry you again but, even at this late hour, owing to the concern of my supporters, I ask you to seriously reconsider by request to you. With kind regards,

Sincerely yours, (Signed) J. G. COATES. J. D. Ormond Esq., Junr., Waipawa.*

Mr. Jull points out that while Mr. Ormond stated that he had received a letter from Mr. Coates on November 13, he had evidently made no public allusion to it until November 21, by which date Mr. Ormond was aware that Mr. Jull had also received a copy of the communication.
