Waipawa’s Health Campaign J Mrs W. A. Sawyer, secretary of the Waiipawa Health Stamp Committee, repents that the amount collected to date ‘ is £64 4/3. St. Mary’s Garden Party In consequence of the continuation of inclement weather the St. Mary’s Garden Party has been further postponed, and will now be held on Election Day (Wednesday of next week). Election Day Closing Many retailers of Napier are adversely criticising the decision to close next Wednesday afternoon, the day of the elections. It is felt by these that a change from Saturday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon is not necessary, if employers make arrangements tio enable their employees to vote. Independent-Nationaj. Campaign In furtherance of his candidature as the Indeipendent-NaUonal aspirant for the Waiipawa seat, Mr John Ormond, junr., is to address the electors in the Waipukurau Municipal Theatre to-., night at 8’ o’clock. The Mayor (Mr I. ) W. N. Mackie) is to preside over what * promises to be a record audience fort the election campaign to date. Jull Memorial Park The double social function being arranged by the Mayor of Waipawa, Mr C. G. E. Harker, for the handing over to the borough of the deeds to the Nellie Jull Memorial Park, and for the presentation of an enlarged photograph to the former Mayor, Mr G. Hunt, has been postponed, owing to numerous engagements not unconnected with the general election, and will take place early in December. Canvasser in Court
An extraordlinary story was told in the Christchurch Magistrate's Court this week, wtheni William Welsh, a canvasser, aged 25, appeared on a charge of attempting to get £6O by false pretences. It was alleged that he ha<l gone to the mother of William Baker, recently sentenced for the theft of money from the Post Office, and told her that a friend of his in the Post' Office had told him fhaT a further £6O shortage had been found in the accounts, and that unless it was paid within three days, a further charge would be preferred against Baker. /
Black Watch Tartan A letter Huis been received by the St. Cuthbert’s College Board of Managers (Auckland) from a former member of the Black Watch Regiment, now living ini Auckland, congratulating it on it,s decision to adopt the Black Watch uniform for the pupils of the .school (states the “New Zealand Herald”), z There are ieight former members of the famous regiment in Auckland, including two captains, and steps a,re being taken to arrange a reunion on the first day of the next' school year, when the uniform will come into use at St. Cuthbert’s.
All Over Sixpence It was a long argument although it concerned only a modest sixpence. A woman had made a purchase in a tobacconist’s and received what she thought! was .short change. She stoutly and wordily maintained that she had tendered half a crown in payment, not a florin. The only catch was that there! was not a single half crown in the cash register where the amount was rung up. But still the woman was not satisfied. Tt was not long before she returned, this time'with a male escort who loudly demanded to see “the joker who tiook the lady down. ’’ That started the argument again and it terminated only when the assistant walked off in disgust leaving the pair to their own devices.
