CIVIL SERVANTS
AND SALARY CUTS WANT RESTORATION A fully representative meeting of Dannevirke civil servants was held on Tuesday night, about 50 being present, to consider the question of restoration of salary deductions. Amongst the officials present was Air H. H. Brown, organiser of the Post and Telegraph Officers’ Association, and Air L. Micllvride, national secretary of the A.S.R.S. A motion was passed unanimously to the effect that “this section of the service is in favour of and expects full restoration of the salary cuts imposed in 1931 and 1932, in view of the improved condition of the country’s finances.”
One of the main grounds for the contention that such restoration should be made was that the civil servants in Britain have had their salaries altered to the rates obtaining before the deductions. As the New Zealand Government followed the lead of the British Government, it was said, in imposing deductions, it should also follow it ini restoring them. The position of 'the superannuation fund was detailed by Air AfcIlvride, who claimed that the so-called “actuarial deficit” in the funds was non-existent as far as the practical administration of the funds was concerned, and had the Governments since 1913 kept to their part of the contract the funds would be showing large surpluses.
