“You should understand that, although there are political parties in the United States, such as Democrat and Republican, when a man gets into office he will usually work for the good of all,” Dr Westby Amyes, a New Zealander who is revisiting Christchurch after long residence in California, told an interviewer. “Even President Roosevelt hasn’t kept many of his pre-inauguration promises. Since he has been President he has found that he has to work for the followers of both parties.” Despite adverse newspaper publicity, said Dr Amyes, Roosevelt remained popular with the people and would probably have a walk-over at the next election. Senator Huey Long would be a had last. “He gets away with some terrible stuff,’’ said the doctor, “but they are just lotting him hang himself.’’
