VICE-REGAL TOUR

OF HAWKE’S BAY LARGE CROWDS IN NAPIER As though making a special attempt for the importance of the occasion, the weather in Napier and district yesterday was beautifully fine for the welcome extended to the G'overnor-Gener-al, Lord Galway, and Lady Galway, on their first visit to Napier and Hawke’s Bay. The Vice-Regal party completed a fairly heavy programme yesterday, attending three functions in Napier in the morning and then in the afternoon travelling to Omahu Pa for the unveiling of the memorial to the late Taranaki Te Ua. At each function Their Excellencies were greeted with cheers and applause, which left no doubt as to the sincerity of the welcomes. For their part, Their Excellencies showed a kindness and understanding that <at once won them to the people, and their visit laid the foundations for'a friendship between Their Excellencies and the Hawke’s Bay people which no doubt the succeeding years and visits will cemenr the firmer. Last night Their Excellencies spent a. quiet evening. VISIT TO WAIROA Punctually at 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday the Vice-Regal party, composed of Lord, and Lady Galway, and the former’s aide de camp/, Sir Standish O’Grady Roche, preceded by the Automobile Association’s patrol car, arrived at the top of Te Uhi in beautiful sunny weather.

The party was met in the county by Mr A. G. Nolan, county chairman, who w’as accompanied by the Mayor, Mr H. L. Harker, and Mrs Harker. Boy Scout lan Allen then flagged to his troop mate, P. Young, at the Post Office that the Vice-Regal party was about to enter the borough. The Fire Brigade siren was then sounded to warn all motorists to observe the parking rules laid down, and the same were right loyally observed. The party soon arrived via Carroll street- and town bridge, the ends of which were beflagged, and the distinguished visitors were conducted to the dais in front of the borough chambers in Coronation Square.

Tn front there was an assemblage of at least 1000 .people, including a muster of about 100 ex-service men under Major J. O. Scott, 70 Roy Scouts, under Mr W. T. Mist, 35 Girl Guides, under Miss V. G. Bainbridge, 25 Brownies, under Miss Habgood, and a strong muster of pupils from the Wai.roa District High School, St. Joseph’s Convent School, Turiroa and Frasertyrwn schools under their respective teachers. As His Excellency passed through the double rank of the ex-servicv men, many of them wearing their medals and other decorations, he shook hands and addressed a few words to most of them.
