VICE REGAL PARTY

IN CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY *r J • Visit to Waipukurau To-day LORD AND LADY GALWAY ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME The recently appointed Gover-nor-General, Viscount Galway, accompanied by Viscountess Galway, paid a brief visit to AV aipukurau to-day. They were accorded an enthusiastic reception in the Municipal Theatre, business premises being closed for part of the afternoon in honour of the auspicious occasion. Their Excellencies left Hastings by car this morning en route for Palmerston North, reaching Waipukurau at 12.50 p.m. Prior to the reception they had luncheon at the Tavistock Hotel.

A large crowd lined the street outside the Theatre, when Their Excellencies arrived.

Lord Galway shook hands with the Returned Soldiers, who paraded under Mr. A. O. Williams, president of the Association, and inspected the Boy Scouts, under Assistant-Scout-master R. Holms. The Theatre was packed, the school children, under Mr. E. E. C. Boyes, headmaster, and staff, being present in full strength. On the platform with the ViceRegal party were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. I. W. N. Mackie), the borough councillors, the town clerk (Mr. H. B. Smart), the Member for the District (Mr. A. E. Jull) and the chairman of the Patangata County Council (Mr. C. Pattison). Two beautiful bouquets were presented to Lady Galway, by Binnie Raymond, and Mrs. G. J. Bromell (president) on behalf of the Women s Institute. Loyal Address. His Worship the Mayor read the following loyal address, an illuminated copy of which was presented to Their Excellencies: — “To His Excellency, the Right Hon. Viscount Galway, G.C.M.G., D. 5.0., 0.8. E., Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of the Dominion of New Zealand, and Her Excellency, Viscountess Galway. “May it please Your Excellencies: “The residents of Waipukurau and District, as loyal subjects of His Most Gracious Majesty King George V., desire to extend to you, as his representative in this Dominion, a cordial and sincere welcome on the occasion of your first visit to this portion of Central Hawke’s Bay. “We are not insensible of the distinguished services you have rendered to the Empire in His Majesty's forces, nor of the recognition of your honourable record involved in your appointment to the responsible position as GovernorGeneral of New Zealand; and with the rest of the Dominion we are delighted that you found it possible to represent His Majesty in our country and assist in promoting the loyal sentiments so assiduously fostered by your predecessors in office. “It affords us special pleasure to have the opportunity so early in your occupancy of your new posi- , tion to meet and welcome you and Her Excellency, to record our appreciation of the kindly feelings that have prompted your short stay at Waipukurau, and to express the hope that you may on some future occasion honour us with a longer [ visit and enjoy the attractions of i our country life.” His Excellency’s Reply. “It gives Lady Galway mid myself great pleasure indeed to pay a visit, even a brief one, to this district, to make your acquaintance, and to offer our best wishes for your happiness and prosperity,’’ said Viscount Galway in reply. He went on to express appreciation of the hearty welcome extended, and regret that, owing to the heavy programme before them, their stay must be a brief one. “We are interested to arrive in the Dominion in Jubilee Year, when thoughts are turned toward Their Majesties, who have occupied the Throne for 25 years,” continued His Excellency. “The Dominion extends to Their Majesties loyal and fervent wishes for their continued happiness

and the hope that for many years they may continue their wonderful work for the British Empire. The Crown is the link between the selfgoverning Dominions and the MotherCountry, and we are filled with devotion to the Royal Family, because we know that they take a deep and sympathetic interest in the Dominions.” Lord Galway went on to say that, before he left England, His Majesty had charged him to convey an expression of his constant solicitation and affectionate regard for the welfare and prosperity of New Zealand.

His Excellency expressed pleasure at seeing so many children present. “We see in them the citizens of the future, on whom devolves the responsibility that their parents and grandparents have carried out so well,” he said. “They will be the builders of a newer and greater New Zealand of the future, which can be achieved only by the energy, hard work, and determination always shown by the Dominions.

“In England,” the speaker continued, “we know of the part that New Zealand played' in the fearful years, 1914 to 1918, when the Dominion showed that it would stop at nothing in the way of self-sacrifice when the interests of the Empire demanded.” Addressing the children he said that he hoped they would always remember the great inheritance they enjoyed in being members of the British Empire, and assured them that their loyalty was appreciated in the Mother Country. He also announced that he had requested the authorities to give the children a half-holiday to mark the occasion of the visit.

Concluding amid hearty applause, Lord Galway again expressed appreciation of the warmth of the welcome extended to him and Lady Galway, and the hope that they would be able to visit the district again at an early date.

The proceedings concluded with thb National Anthem, played by the Waipukurau Town Band, under Mr. E. Malkin. AT THE SANATORIUM. After leaving Waipukurau, the Vice-Regal party made a final stop in Central Hawke’s Bay at the Pukeora Sanatorium, where they were accorded another warm welcome, the patients and staff greatly appreciating the opportunity of meeting Their Excellencies. RECEPTION AT WATPAWA A cordial reception was also held at Waipawa this morning, when the Mayor (Mr. C. G. E. Harker), in the presence of a large assemblage of the public, presented a loyal address to Their Excellencies.
