STRUCK BY TRAIN

Car Hurled Down Bank ACCIDENT NEAR WAIPUKURAU DRIVER’S LUCKY ESCAPE \ Struck by a train last evening at the level crossing on the main road between Waipukurau and Waipawa, a car owned and driven by Mr. J. Goring Johnston, of Tamumu, was hurled back several feet across the Toad, to finish up badly smashed down a bank and through a fence. The driver had a miraculous escape, suffering only shock and slight injuries to one hand. It is understood that the driver of the car, who was travelling towards Waipawa, mistook the lights of the approaching train for those of another car coming from the opposite direction. Near the scene of the accident the road runs parallel with the railway line for some distance, on a down grade, and then turns slightly, crossing the line to continue on an upgrade away from it. The crossing is in a r light hollow. The front portion of the car, which struck the engine of the train, war. tadly smashed and twisted. The train, south-bound from Napier and due at Waipukurau at 6.25 p.m., was not damaged, and left Waipukurau only a few minutes behind schedule. Mr. Goring Johnston was admitted to Sister Anderson’s private 'hospital and is progressing satisfactorily.
