The Bread War in Napier The Napiei- branch of the Labour Parity have adopted the following resolution in regard to the local bread •war:—“That the members fully endorse the action of Mr W. E. Barnard, M.P., in siteps taken by him to arrive at a settlement in the dispute among the Napier bakers.” Hopes Dashed. 1 The hopes of a number Of people in sjjew Zealand to obtain part of “the Bailey Millions,” an estate in Chancery said to total £20,000,000, have •been dashed by the receipt of information that the claim appears to be “quite unsustainable.” A company was registered in Auckland last year, under the name of Eldorado, Limited, to finance the prosecution of claims, The nominal capital of the company was £3OOO and the maximum allotment to any applicant was 10 shares of 10s each. Box at the Door Fails. After trying out the experiment for 12 months, the vestry of All Saints, Nelson has decided to revert to the old system of handing round the offetory plate instead of receiving the offerings of the people in a box at the church door (says the Mail).
Though the latter represents perhaps a more idealistic method, in practice it brealks down, particularly with regard to visitors and strangers, who Zare not used to the custom. The ves\try for some personal reasons regrets having to revert to the old and more generally used method, but found after trying it out for 12 months that the work of the church has been severely handicapped through a big drop in income. New Flax Strains Following upon the floods in May, when the Manawatu river broke through a stopbank and washed into . the Moutoa swamp, valuable strains of flax which Massey College had raised, men were occupied in retrieving the fans’’ and getting them speedily .planted. The authorities also came to light with money to close the breach in. the bank, and the work was finished in time to ipreventi the flood of Tuesday last spilling oven- the same area for the third time. The whole of the flax is now planted and from this "nurstery” millers will be able in future ./years to secure for commercial areas, vfans’’ of these strains of flax, which produce an infinitely more desirable flax fibre than that at present being milled. Valued Advertising. A tribute to the power of newspaper advertising was paid by Mr. 'Colin Eglinton, retiring president of the Palmerston North High School Old Boys’ Association, at the annual reunion. Last year, he said, a large number of circulars had been sent to members reminding them of the function, but of the 85 present only about 25 had been present in answer to the circular. The remainder had attended because of having read the advertisement- in the newspapers, and to a lesser extent through personal contact with the officers of the association. On this occasion the function was again well advertised, and there was an attendance of 110, a record, from the silver jubilee function fright years ago.
