DAN NEVI RKE CE LEBR ATION S MONSTER SPORTS CARNIVAL The King’s Silver Jubilee on Monday next will be celebrated in Dannevirke with a monster Sports Carnival, which is being held on the Showgrounds.
The day will commence with a procession of all the Bands from the top of the town to the grounds at 10 a.m. and the opening address will be made by His Worship the Mayor, Mr. M. D. Smith, at 11 a.m. A large programme of events has been arranged including chopping and sawing, which
has drawn approximately 190 entries, axemen from all part 3 of the North Island baying nominated. Willow blocks have been secured for these
events. The atiil-u.;.? section is : ler the control of the Dannevirke Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, and this body has received entries which will prove an attraction to the pro- , gramme. Highland dancing and piping classes which will be judged by Mr. R. Buns, of Pahiatua, are causing much interest. Tug-o’-war entries close the morning of the sports and this event carries cash prizes of £6. This is only the second occasion on which greyhound racing has been staged in Dannevirke, and so large are the entries in this that the heats will have to be run off beforehand, and the final on the day of the sports. Four ding dong bouts have been arranged by the local Boxing Association. The Dannevirke amateurs are matched against Palmerston North boxers. Numerous other attractions will be going on throughout the day and these include a Baby ■Show, sheaf tossing, chain stepping and weight guessing. A plentiful supply of hot water will be available for picnic parties and in addition to this Mr. R. Nicol, of the Criterion Hotel, will be on the grounds with refreshments. Side show space is available for all those who apply. In the evening the celebrations will conclude with a “Movie” Ball in the Drill Hall. Prize.' are to be awarded for lady and gentleman who provide the best impersonation of any screen star or character, and also for the best impersonation of any pair of screen stars or characters. Wi Duncan’s full orchestra will provide the music. Profits from the functions both day and night are being devoted to the Mayor’s Rlief of Distress Fund.
