A COUNCIL’S STAFF

INQUIRY NOT BE HELD

SAYS MAYOR OF CHRISTCHURCH

An .assurance (that there was no possibility of 'the council shirking the matter of inquiry into the proposal that it should not employ men whose wives are also in employment, was given by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) and the Dqputy-.Mayor (the Rev. J. K. Archer) at a recent meeting of the Christchurch City Council. In reply to a question by Councillor A. E. Armstrong, Councillor Archer said that some doubt had existed in the minds of the By-Laws Committee, to which the question had to be referred, as to the legality of any action the council might make. The solicitor of the Municipal Association had been consulted, however, and the council it appeared had power to act in the matter if it wished. The next step was that the committee was having a full report brought down as to how many people were involved and in what way. When thait report was to hand, he presumed the By-Laws Committee would report back to the council. Councillor Armstrong said it was nine weeks since ho had raised the subject. The council should take up the matter in a more definite manner as he knew it affected thirteen of the council’s employees at least. Councillor Archer disputed the time that had elapsed since the question was raised. If Councillor Armstrong knew that there were thirteen cases involved, he knew more than the speaker or the committee, which had not shelved the question. Councillor Armstrong urged that a recommendation on the matter might be made to the incoming council. The Mayor said the question must come before the council again, bat there was no possibility of it being shirked.
