ROADS AND STREETS

WAIPUKURAU BOROUGH REPORT OF ENGINEER i The borough Engineer (Mr. H. B. ■Smart) submitted the following report to the Council at its meeting last evening: — Water Reticulation. — For the month of February the centrifugal pump ran 195 1-4 hours and the ram pump 17 hours. The number of units of electricity consumed was 9372 and the estimated amount of water pumped was 4,058,000 gallons, a reduction of 2,022,000 gallons on the amount pumped for the previous month. For the corresopnding month in 1934 the pump ran 160 hours, using 7,422 units of electricity and pumped 3,200,000 gallons. The water level indicator at the reservoir has been out of action and upon investigation the float was found to be leaking. This has been repaired and the indicator is now in operation. Nothing further has been done in connection with the new starter required at . the pumping station. One new water connection has been laid in Jellicoe Street, and another consumer has connected to the supply outside the Borough boundary in Racecourse Road. Two consumers were discon-

nected for non-payment of water charges, but satisfactory arrangements being made, they were reconnected. Building Permits. —Three building permits have been issued at an estimated value of £llO4. Fees paid: £4 15/-. Infectious and Notifiable Diseases: No case has been reported within the Borough during the past month. Roads: Main Highways: Red metal has been screened and delivered on the Porangahau Road to build up the shoulders of the sealing, 26 cubic yards being required. Forty cubic yards of river shingle has been delivered on the approach to the traffic bridge. Main highway claims have been completed and forwarded to the Main Highway Board. Grading and general routine work has been carried out in various roads as opportunity offered.

Tamumu Road Culvert. —The dismantling of the old bridge and the filling over the new culvert should be attended to immediately, but there seems little likelihood of the work being done by the permanent staff as general maintenance work keeps them fully occupied. Footpaths.—The extension of the concrete footpath in Holyrood Terrace of 255 links has been completed at a total cost of £3l 1/2. This includes an additional length of 85 Jinks to complete the frontage of the next section to that recently built on. .The balance available in the Footpaths Loan Account for further construction amounts to £24 7/1. The concrete mixer requires attention before any further work is undertaken. The formation and metalling of the footpath in River Terrace authorised . at last meeting has not yet been com-

menced. Theatre. —As recommended by the Theatre Committee six new table tops I •and 18 trestles have been made and the old ones repaired. There are now twelve table tops and 36 trestles in the theatre. Broken chairs have , also been repaired and three dozen coat hooks replaced in the cloak rooms. A heating point and an additional light have bepn installed at the back of the stage. Re-Valuation of the Borough.— Mr. Douglas, the Government valuer, arrived here on the 11th. inst., and has commenced the re-valuation of the Borough, but the new valuations will not take effect until the 1936-37 rating year. Licenses. —The following licenses have been issued and fees received: Heavy traffic 22, fees received £126 17/3; motor drivers’ 7, fees received £1 15/-. No. 5 Scheme. —Men working under this scheme have been engaged principally on the reserves and, the main drain. This drain has been repegged and levels taken. The new cut is not yet completed. Loans Conversion. —The loans conversion is well in band, and to date 24 debenture holders have consented to conversion of £91,510 out of a total of £92.760. Two debenture holders involving the sum of £1250 have yet to reply.
