“DRIVING HORSES OUT”

Ellerslie Man’s Views SYSTEM OF N.Z. RACING COMPETITION WITH AUSTRALIA (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Mr. K. Austin, manager of the Ellerslie Stud, who has returned from Australia by the Maunganui, says that the New Zealand Government has realised it is “killing the goose that lays the golden egg.” “The system under which racing operates in New Zealand is,” he says, “driving good horses out of the country.” “Australian buyers are prepared to give a fair price for any good New Zealand horse, racing on a firm basis, in Victoria. “Largely because of bookmakers it is an easy matter for an owner to plaae £2oo' or £3OO on his horse, without shortening the price a great deal if the horse is a good one.” Consequently, the betting gave the owner a chance to make expenses. Until the bookmakers were registered in New Zealand, and taxes on their turnover diverted to Racing Club revenue, he said he could not see much hope of competing with Australia.
