—— <*> Council’s Monthly Meeting HELD THIS MORNING GENERAL MATTERS DISCUSSED The monthly meeting Of the Waipawa County Council was held this morning, Cr. N. M. Paulsen presiding over the following members: — Crs. J. Butler, C. F. Bainbridge,. B. Gray, L. Glenny and C. Thomsen. The .clerk (Mr. F. Holt) and the engineer (Mr. V.< Douglas) were in attendance. .Removal of Shingle. Mr. Guy Livingston wrote: Ar county contractor? are preparing to remove shingle from the Tuki Tuki river-bed just below the Fairfield crossing, I would like to know what arrangements ""e council has made to compensate ratepayers in the event of damage being done to their properties by flooding caused through the removal of shingle. It ha,d extensive powers for the removal of shingle under the Public Works Act. It was decided to advise that the council considered that there .was no danger to ratepayers’ properties. Motorists’ Request. The Hawke's Blfy Automobile Association wrote asking the council to paint the’ first post on each end of every bridge in the county. It was .decided to agree to the request so far as bridges on main and secondary highways were concerned.

Superannuation for Staff. A circular letter was received regarding the National Provident Fund, and it was decided to obtain further particulars of the scheme for consideration at the next meeting. Otawhao Water Supply Mr. A. A. Mulinder wrote as follows: I have received word from Mr. RaVisom that the mon'by' is.available for the Otauwhao water supply scheme, and 1 now wish to have all the particulars from you so as to be able to place them before the meeting of settlers which I intend to call. The scheme, was to cost £4168 and the subsidy was to be £l-500, with a saving of £5OO by indenting the pipes and possible a further saving on the labour if subsidised by the Unemployment Board. The chairman said that the whole of the necessary procedure had been outlined in a letter already sent to Mr. Mulinder. The first step was for the settlers to agree among themselves that they definitely wanted the scheme, and to sign an application for the council to declare a special rating area. x The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that Mr. *E. J. Elliott had withdrawn from the scheme. Noxious Weeds Act. The Department of Agriculture advised that county councils could now assume the administration of the Noxious Weeds Act. “This seems an acknowledgment that the Government can’t do the job of administering the Act,” said the chairman. , Cr. Thomsen: They don’t want to! The chairman said that the regulations gave the .council power to strike a rate, but the matter would have to be gone into very carefully before anything was done. It was decided to procure a copy of the Act. Loan Conversion. Messrs. J. H. Francis and Co., Ltd. wrote advising that the conversion scheme was almost completed.
