ALERT RESIDENT
CIRCUMVENTS AN INTRUDER INCIDENT NEAR ASHBURTON (Per Press Association). ASHBURTON, Last Night. The township of Lynhurst, in the Methven district, was the scene of an exciting capture last night when a young Christchurch man was found in a local store allegedly with a quantity of goods placqfi ready for removal. A resident, Mr. Errol Stewart, on going to the store to post a letter, saw a man leaving the vicinity. After going two miles he decided to return, calling upon a neighbour, Mr. T. Gray, who got a gun. Mr. Stewart's sister accompanied the men. The three drove up to the store and then turned on the light switch in the car, Illuminating the interior of the store ,and a man was seen inside.
Miss Stewart pluckily volunteered to go 200 yards to rouse the owner, Mr. Polinghorne, and his son, despite the fact that the night was pitch-dark and it was not known if the intruder had accomplices.
Another man then came up and Mr. Polinghorne and the party entered the store. The man made no resistance when he saw Mr. Gray’s gun
and was subsequently put under arrest by the Methven constable. The man had driven from the city in a car, having a bicycle also, evidently to carry the goods from the store to the car.
