SECOND EDITION COMING OF AGE
A WAIPUKURAU GATHERING
IN HONOUR OF MISS COCHRANE
A most enjoyable evening was spent by a large number of folk from Dannevirke, Hastings and Waipukurau, who attended at the Masonic Hall on Thursday evening as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. Cochrane, of Lindsay. Waipukurau, on the occasion of the celebration of the 21st birthday of their daughter Margaret (Peggy). The hall was tastefully decorated with blue and gold streamers, a verybeautiful colour effect being obtained. A programme of popular dances had been arranged and those present derived considerable pleasure from “tripping lightly’’ to the strains of music supplied by Mr. Les Anderson's (Dannevirke) orchestra. An added pleasure were the songs of Miss D. Jones and the humorous recitations of Miss G. Major, while the dainty and skilful Highland dancing, to the skirl of the pipes played by Mr Sutherland, of Miss Jessie McKenzie,, delighted everyone. Mr. A. H. Purcell was also a popular performer with his clever imitations of various instruments played on a concertina. The supper-room presented a most pleasing sight, the long tables being attractively decorated with bowls of beautiful roses, etc., and spread with an abundance of good things. An imposing and beautifully decorated birthday cake, the gift of Mr. Anderson. Dannevirke, took pride of place. At the conclusion of supper a short toast list was enthusiastically and musicaly honoured. Mr. E. J. Turner proposed the toast of the principal guest and Mr. F V Ward that of Mr. and Mrs. J. Cochrane, Miss Margaret Cochrane responding to the former and Mr. Cochrane the latter. Mr. Cochrane also presented his daughter with a large key symbolical of her
coming-of-age. making suitable humorous reference to the ocasion. He also thanked, on behalf of Mrs. Cochrane and himself. the many kind friends who had helped in the ar-
rangements for the evening, and particularly mentioned Mr. and Mr?. D. Urquhart. A number of telegrams and letters of good wishes were received by Miss Cochrane, who is well known in 1.0.0. F.
