OUTSTANDING SUCCESS

Waipukurau School Ball ATTENDANCE NEARLY 1300 MANY ATTRACTIVE COSTUMES I — With, a record attendance of nearly 1300 in the Municipal Theatre last evening, the 1934 Waipukurau District High School ball was undoubtedly the most successful function of the kind ever held in the town.

Eagerly looked forward to, the ball was a gala occasion for the children of the district, wflio, clad in a variety of fancy costumes, ranging from the picturesque to the bizarre, gaily disported themselves in polkas, barn and square dances. The graceful way in which they executed the intricate steps reflected great credit on Miss Caughloy and the other members of the teaching staff,,by whom they had been trained.

Visitors were present from all parts of Central Hawke’s Bay, including Patangata, Otane, Flemington, Waipawa, and Wanstead. The music, supplied by the Ritz Band, was outstandingly good, and fully justified the selection of a local orchestra. Messrs W. Phillips and L. R. Cutforth ably carried out the duties of M.C.’s.

The organisation of sudh a large function was naturally no easy task, but it was admirably handled by Messrs W. G. Cook (chairman) and E. J. Turner (secretary), ably assisted by the following committee: —Mesdames R. Guy, E. Taylor. C. J. McLean, E. J. Turner. J. Bendeich, F. Fraser, H. Eden; Messrs C. J. McLean (headmaster), E. W. Taylor, E. G. Dowriek, T>. W. Carpenter, T>. "R. Cutforth, D. M. Robertson, W. Giddens, H. De Lacey. J. Ponder, and D. Brown; together with all members of the Home and School League.

The supper was of course the big feature of the evening so far as the youngsters were concerned. Th£ tables, charmingly decorated with bowls of spring flowers, were laden with good things provided by the parents. Miss Caughley, assisted by the ladies of the committee and numerous other helpers, was responsible for this department.

All those connected with the hall have good reason to he pleased with the success which attended their efforts. The takings totalled £57, an increase of £5 over those of last year. The committee wishes to thank all ladies who helped in preparing and serving the supper; also business people for donations for supper; the Hockey Club and Messrs Williams and 'Kettle’s staff for donations; Messrs Annand and Richards for the loan of a washing-up outfit and NTr F.
