A Press Association message received to-day from Wanganui announces the death of Mr James Caffin, in has 93rd year. He was formerly a resident of Dunedin where for mqhy years he was a partner in. the stationery firm of Messrs Wise, Caffin (and Co., later being Dominion representative for Messrs Sands and McDougall, Melbourne, when he became known as th# •"father of the road." He was the first commercial traveller, in New Zealand. *
The death occurred suddenly at his residence, Wellington, yesterday afternoon of the Public Trustee’, Mr J. W. Macdonald, C.M.G. Mi*'Macdonald was the eldest son of the late iMr J. A. Macdonald of Timaru, and wfts horn at Christchurch in 1882. He received his education at Timaru and o'n leaving school joined the staff of the x Lyt> telton Times,’ Christchurch, but on subsequently qualifiying for a position in the Public Service, he rose through its various branches to the position of Public Trustee, which appointment he received in 1920. In the New Year honours in 1929 Mr Macdonald received the insignia of C.M.G.
