LOCAL BODY CONTROL

AMALGAMATION FAVOURED BY H.B. COUNTY CHAIRMAN The desirability of the amalgamatnc of local bodies wis briefly referred to by Mr E. B. Logar, chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Coun:v Council, when speaking at Mor ia/’” meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce. He hoped to see cs it x. bodies appointed that would co.i:rol the activities of numbers of bodi?s now functioning on their own aecomt.

The present system was wrong, he said, and he was confident that a proper system of amalgamation would lead to the wholesale dismissal of many of the Government departments. A combining of interests would simplify matters and remove the existing difficulty of being able to get anything done. Too many different bodies had now to be consulted and long delays frequently occurred before replies were received, and in some cases none were ever forthcoming. "I hope to see such a central body formed here, and I hope I will not be

chairman of it,” added /Mr Logan, amid laughter. Mr A. S. Tonkin said that most local bodies agreed to the principle of amalgamation in treory only. When it came to active practice it was a different matter.
