INJURED ON DUTY
POLAND’S HEAD HANGMAN
SUING FOR DAMAGES
WARSAW, May 21'.
For physical injuries sustained at the post of duty, Poland’s master executioner, Alfred Knal, who has decapitated, asphyxiated and hanged his fellow-countrymen for some decades, is suing the State for damages. Knal, who heavily disguised himself under the “trade name’ 7 of Maciejewski, during his term of office, alleges that he suffered severe wounds during the execution of a notorious criminal in Sarnbor last year. The doomed ruffian, despite his heavy chains, fought like a lion to prevent Knal from placing the rope round his neck, and struck the executioneer such a blow below the belt that, says Knal, he has suffered chronic internal pains ever since.
