Blom wrote applying for rebate of half year’s charges for the water and garbage on house property in Russell street, which had been vacant from November, 1933, to May 17, 1934. It was decided to advise Mr Blom that the council had no power to grant the request as the whole of the vacancy had not occurred during the financial year. Revaluation of Borough The Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister in charge of the Valuation Department, wrote in regard to the request for an early valuation of the borough, stating that the valuer-general reported that he had a full programme of revision work this year, but expected to take Waipukiriu Borough in hand next year.--L'lic letter was received and D was decided to endeavour to have the revaluation car-iM out before- the next financial year. Ken 4 ; of Paddock Mr T. Mclntyre wrote stating that he had not used the power house paddock for the last two years and therefore was not liable for amount of £6 charged against him. The Mayor said that the ground was leased for 5 years to February, 1933. The matter was left to 'the Mayor and town clerk to investigate and report to the next meeting. Finance Accounts amounting to £2193 3/9 were passed for payment.

Purchase of Truck Reports regarding tho prices and performances of various trucks were considered, and it was eventually decided, on the motion of Cr Martin, seconded by the Mayor, to purchase a 40 cwt. Ford, with steel-lined dump body, and hydraulic hand-operated hoist, tho price being £377 15s. Off this sum £lOO is to bo allowed for the borough’s old truck which is to be traded in. In the course of the discussion Cr. Granger moved an amendment that a Bedford truck be-purchased. “It is a British truck, and, especially at times like this, we should support British industry,” he said, adding that by helping to put money into the pockets of tho British workers New Zealand would be creating a market for its own products.

It was pointed out, however, that the Ford was equally a British product, and that the Ford Company had spent millions of pounds in England. Cr McCarthy suggested that the question should be settled by the toss of a coin and when his sugestion was not adopted he seconded the amendment, which was lost, the mover and seconder being the only members who voted for it. Cr. Brathwaite took no part in the voting. ”1 want to keep right out of this i ncase anyone thinks I have an axe to grind,” he said. Cricket Pitch Permission was given the Cricket Club to fence off the pitch. Heater for Beading Boom Cr. Staines suggested that a heater should be provided in the public reading room. “We have visitors to the town who might want to *put in an hour there and I think we should make them as comfortable as possible,” he said. ”If there were a header, there might be a crowd monopolising the papers,’’ said Cr. Brathwaite. Tt was eventually decided that an electric heater be used at the discretion of the librarian. Guidance for Motorists Cr. Brathwaite referred to the fact

that motorists were still missing their way at the Post Office corner and he suggested that a white line should be painted round the corner in the centre of the street, as was done on most main highways. The suggestion was adopted.
