FAREWELL FUNCTION
MR. J. HEPBURN HONOURED.
AT ODDFELLOWS’ GATHERING.
Under the auspices of the Waipukurau Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows a representative social gathering of members of the Order, and friends, was held last evening, for the purpose of bidding farewell to Bro. J. Hepburn, P.G., who is on the eve of his departure for Napier. Coming from Gisborne to Waipukurau a year back Bro. Hepburn had been very active, in promoting the good and welfare of the local lodge, and the brethren assembled to pay what was considered a well deserved tribute to his worth as an Oddfellow and a citizen associate.
Bro. A. H. Purcell, the Noble Grand, presided, and at the supper interval which followed the close of the usual fortnightly meeting, took advantage of the occasion to express in eulogistic terms sentiments of appreciation and goodwill toward the guest of honour, saying that his departure would be greatly regretted by all the members. He handed to Bro. Hepburn a tobacco pouch and lighter as a small token of esteem, wishing him every success in his new sphere of endeavour. Bros. W. Chappel, P.G., F. Sayliss, F.S., and M. Ujdur also paid a warm tribute to the part played by Bro. Hepburn in the affairs of the lodge. Musical honours were then cordially extended to the departing guest, who replied in an appropriately appreciative speecii, stating that he had spent a very happy term among the brethren of the lodge. The health of the visitors was proposed by the chairman, in cordial terms, Messrs. D. Milne and A. C. Holms responding in congratulatory speeches as to the spirit of good-fellowship displayed by the members of Waipukurau Xodgp; Very enjoyable and varied instrumental numbers were. contributed by Bro. Purcell and Mr. H. Clapperton, while songs were rendered by Messrs. Milne and Sayliss, with a recitation by Mr. Holms. Bro. Chappel gave the sentiment of. “The Press,” and his specially ' complimentary speech was endorsed by the Noble Grand, the Secretary, and Bros. J .Lovett, P.G., and Ujdur.
With a special expression of appreciation to the chairman, proposed by Bro. Hepburn, and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,’’ also the National Anthein, the pleasing function concluded.
