THE MONTH’S WORK

The Overseer (Air. H. M. Tansley) submitted the following report to the Borough Council last evening:—

The spoil from the sides of the drain in Mr. Monckton’s property is now being wheeled into the creek. This will be completed after this “stand down” week.

The growth from the sides of the streets has been removed from Marlborough Street, Railway Esplanade, Herbert Street, St. Mary’s Road, Tutanekai Road, Holyrood Terrace, Wallace Road, Fleming Road and Kitchener Street.

The bride approach, Mt. Herbert Road, Marlborough Street and Main Street East have been graded. The work of constructing the new concrete culvert under the small bridge on Mt. Herbert Road is proceeding satisfactorily, and an excellent job is being done. The foundations are in, and one third of the length of the culvert completed. The whole job should be completed sometime next week. Maintenance work has been carried out on Marlborough Street, St. Mary’s Road, Porangahau Road, Herbert Street, Fleming Road, Gaisford Terrace, Nelson Street, Kitchener Street, Wallace Road, Farm Road, Jellicoe Street.

Men working under the No. 5 unemployment scheme have been employed removing spoil from drain to creek bed, tidying and weeding reserves and cemetery, and loading shingle. The following licenses have been issued and fees received: —280 motor drivers, £7O, making 287 to date; 18 heavy traffic, £95 4/-; six dangerous goods, £l9; five kerbside pumps, £10; one auctioneer’s, £3B 10/-; and one taxi, £2. REPORT OF BOROUGH INSPECTOR The inspector (Mr. J. Gardner) reported:— Water Reticulation. — For the month of May the centrifugal pump ran 144£ hours. The number of units of electricity used was 6,735 and the estimated amount of water pumped was 2,890,000 gallons. For the corresponding month last year, the centrifugal pump ran 130 hours, using 6,038 units of electricity, and the estimated amount of water pumped was 2,600,000 gallons. Infectious and Notifiable Diseases. .—One case of pulmonary tuberculosis has been reported during the month. Septic Tank. —The work of transferring the pumping plant to deal with the effluent from the tank when the river is in flood is now nearly completed. A trial run will be made this week, and the plant left so as to run automatically. The sewer" drainage connection has been laid to the Tourist Motor Co.’s depot in Railway Esplanade.
