CENTRAL H.B S BRANCHES i MEETING AT OMAKERE The monthly meeting of the Omakere Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, when the president, Mrs. Douglas Williams, presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the greeting song, after which business and correspondence was discussed. One new member was elected. The chief business of the afternoon was the forming of the year’s programme, some helpful hints being given by members. Mrs. Forbes McHardy was chosen a,s delegate to attend the annual meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Federation at Otane. A “bring and buy’’ stall was held; also an interesting competition, which was won by Mrs. E. Nairn, Mrs. Forbes McHardy being second. A delicious tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Aitken, W. Kittow, L. Kittow and Miss Kittow. A community sing and the singing of the National Anthem brought a happy afternon to a close. ELSTHORPE BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Elsthorpe Women’s Institute was held on Friday night when the institute’s fourth birthday party was celebrated. All the members’ husbands, fathers, brothers and friends were asked and were given a very pleasant evening. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Williams, the vice-president, Mrs. Nilsson, extended a hearty welcome to all.
A splendid programme was contri-* bated to by members living on the various roads. St. Lawrence road: A play entitled, • “Aunt Lizzie's Friend,” recitations by Misses Lizette, Burling and Stafford; song, Miss Stephenson, and a wool-winding competition for men. Coast road: Competition, parts of the body, and demonstration of wool-spinning. Valley road: Art gallery. Atua road: Song, Mrs. Tiffen and memory competition. Village: Pianoforte duets by Misses Nelson and Cheer. After a bounteous supper the youngest member, Miss B. Priest, lit the four candles on the cake and Mrs. Me Au lay blew them out and cut the cake which had been made and beautifully iced by Mrs. Lizette. The competitions were won by the following ladies and men:—Parts of the body, Mrs. Dillon and Mrs. Walker; memory competition, Mrs. B. Couper; bowl of mixed flowers, Miss N. Dillon 1, Mrs. A. Williams 2; bowl of flowers, one kind, Mrs. Tiffen 1, Mrs. Nilsson 2; pair of men's socks, Mrs. Lizette and Mrs. A. Williams 1, Mrs. Burling 2; wool-winding, Mr. S. Tiffen and Mr. Hardy. Mr. Ryan presented the points prizes won during the year for the various competitions to Mrs. Nelson 1, Mrs. Sutherland 2, Mrs. Nuthall 3, Mrs. W. Watson 4, and also thanke dthe ladies for the pleasant evening. Dancing was indulged in for a time, when the singing of “God Save the King” brought a splendid evening to a close.
