MUNICIPAL THEATRE

MABIE DRESSLER, POLLY MORAN FRIDAY AND SATURDAY If laughs are any cure for the depression, Marie Dressier and Polly Moran do their share in their newest Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture, “Prosperity, which opens Friday and and Saturday at the Waipukurau Theatre. Fast, furious and funny, the two Hollywood bluebirds appear as rival mothers-in-law doing hectic battle. In fact “Prosperity” is “Caught Short,” “Reducing,” “Politics” and “Emma,” rolled into one. The comedy highlights include the Christmas Night when Miss Dressier, Miss Moran and Foster all turn up dressed as Santa Clauses and battlo for the. honour of officiating at the Christmas tree, the comical squabble of the mothers-in-law that breaks up the wedding ceremony and sends the youngsters to be married in peace by the mayor, and many other screaming situations. The denouement, with a gripping bit of drama affords Miss Dressier opportunity for some very dramatic “straight” characterisation as well. Sam Wood directed the diverting drama of small-town life with a cast that was literally made for it. Anita Page and Norman Foster play the two married children of the battling dowagers, and little Jacquie Lyn and Jerry Tucker are in turn their children. There will be a matinee on ’Saturday at 2.30 p.m.
