TO “ONE OF THE CROWD” A CITY SIDELIGHT “Accused is one of the crowd that has given Latimer Square its bad reputation. Eight or nine of them are now in prison for consorting there,” satyl Senior-Sergeant Fox in the MagisAmc’s Court, Christchurch, recently. '■We Sergeant was referring to Sarah Bell, of Bealey Avenue, a domestic, 50 years of age. Accused appeared before. Mr H. PLawry, S.M., on two charges of being an idle and disorderly person, in that she had no lawful and visible means of support and secondly that she consorted with reputed thieves and prostitutes without lawful and visible means of support. Pleas of not guilty were entered. Constable B. B. Pender said that he had seen accused in Latimer Square on several occasions when he was on duty especially to observe women of doubtful character. Mrs Bell had consorted with thieves and these women. Constable L. P. Pickets gave coroborative evidence. The senior-sergeant explained that /Mrs Bell's casd was not as serious those of a similar type which had
recently been brought before the Court. She had only twice previously been convicted —in 1930, for drunkenness. “If I find you with any of these people again I will give you the maximum sentence/’ warned the Magistrate, ordering Mrs Bell to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months.
