FASHIONS

ACCESSORIES They come in threesomes this autumn, for one cannot buy either a bag, or shoes, or gloves without immediately linking it up with the other two. First of all, I must tell you about the very newest bag - , the sensation oi the season —the wooden bag! Made of unpolished walnut, the mark.ng o± the wood produce a delightful effect, and the bag is treated in a special way so that it is as light and soft and pliable as the best leather. Another accessory of note is a smart pair Of brown court shoes with the new diagonal raised tucking. For shoes and gloves and bags this season carry on the talc of plcatings and tuckings and pipings expressed by our clothes. A glove to note is the new inset gusset-gauntlet, in beige kid, with brown gusset and amusing little tabs running up the gauntlet in front, each tab ornamented with a bronze tiny lozenge button. The gauntlet glove that takes particular fancy at the moment is in black kid (to tone with the black banding -of the bag) and piped with beige. Another glove is in brown leather, with the new “Tudoresque” piping on the gathered gauntlet cuff. Another season’s novelty is + he matching glove, bag-muff and scarf in a fur or fur fabric. One set. that particularly took my fancy is in leopardplush, which looks exactly like the real skin, and the gauntlet glove is real leopard skin, with the palm in brown leather, and the glove lined with exquisite soft and fleecy white lamb. Under the flap of the hag-muff that goes with this set. is a large and roomy bag, fastened with a lightning zipp fastener, while the muff itself is lined with the new quilted white satin —so cosy for motoring or travelling. Now let’s turn our attention to woollen scarves. There is a jolly plaid one in brown, bronze, yellow, green, and beige, with brown fabric gloves with the same woolly gauntlets to match. And the set is quite inexpensive, for all its gaiety and novelty.

HOUSEKEEPING

YOUR KITCHEN Every home, if it is to be run efficiently, must have good tools —not -only because they mean good work, but because they mean more leisure JBPPor the housewife. ’ The necessary tools for the kitchen can be divided into four distinct sections —equipment for cleaning, cooking, laundry-work and washing-up. No home equipment can be considered complete, unless it includes some kind of vacuum cleaner, as well as a carpet sweeper. A vacuum cleaner will not only keep your carpets free from dust, but it •will also keep your curtains and upholstered furniture in perfect condition. I consider a carpet sweeper is a necessity, even in the home where there is a vacuum cleaner, for the sweeper will pick up bits or crumbs in less •time than it takes to prepare the vacuum for use. I/) To keep your polished floors m perkj feet condition you will require both ~ an impregnated mop and a special device for wax polishing. The mop should have a solid which makes the recharging simple, for it is only necessary io pour the oil on the top, when it will impregnate the mop immediately. You will also need a long handled polisher, for you do not want to go down On your hands and knees for this work. The floor cleaning equipment should be completed by the purchase of a long-handled dust-pan and brush. Another excellent device which might well be included in the cleaning equipment of every home, is the brush which has a reservoir for holding a dry-cleaning fluid. When this is in use, the fluid flows down the bristles and the brush removes all grease staifris and spots from carpets, curtains and upholstery. b Other tools which will make your 5/-work easy are the special impregnated -cloths and pads for cleaning windows

and metals.. Of course the greatest aid to easy cooking is a kitchen cabinet. Most of these are fitted with a porcelaiu-tonped table, a pastry board, a flour sifter and air-tight jars which hold sugar, currants and so on, everything yon require being ready to hand. Among your cooking equipment you will require a pair of scales, for ingredients should always beweighed, not guessed. Then you should also, include a minc-ing-machine and a good kitchen knives designed for various purposes. One of the most . modern devices which will help you in the preparation of meals is a cream-maker. Your cooking equipment should, include various types of spoons, for special purposes, as well as a selection of plain and fancy pastry-cutters.
