LABOUR’S HOPES

CHANCES OF VICTORY AT NEXT ELECTION Opinions that Labour would win a sweeping victory at the next general election were expressed by party leaders at a social given to welcome delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party, held recently, in Christchurch. 'Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P., leader of the Opposition, said that after having travelled through the greater part of the South Island he had higher hopes than ever for a sweeping Labour victory at the next poll. “People in the community — the greater bulk of them —have suffered during the last two or three years to an extent that cannot be reconciled to the prevailing conditions alone,’ he declared. “I make no qualification to the statement that Labour will become the Government of this country.” Mr. R. Semple (Wellington East) declared that conference delegates ■were assembled in Christchurch to prepare a plan and decide ways and means for the final campaign to clear the way for the New Zealand working man and woman. “The Labour Party has been fighting for many years now, sometimes winning, sometimes losing, but I am

prepared to say this —and I am not hysterically inclined —that all the battles of the past will be crystallised in one great Labour victory.” Freedom from oppression was demanded, if not for the present generation, for the children now growing up, continued Mr. Semple. It was a serious, big and mighty job in which all could help—to build' a corporate commonwealth within New Zealand. The party had to fight on to be sure of ultimate victory. It was a sacred task and a mighty responsibility.
