TELEGRAPH CHARGES
A CHRISTCHURCH PROTEST WANT PUBLICATION OF FIGURES (Per Press Association.; CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The telegraphic bills of several Christchurch business houses have increased since the new scale of charges was introduced by 10 to 15 per cent. This statement was made and widely supported at a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to-night. In the discussion the action of the Government in imposing the extra rate was criticised severely, several speakers describing it as merely a device to obtain more revenue. The suggstion made was that business firms would not pay this extra tax and would be obliged to make less m e or the telegraphic service so that th? department might actually lose revei ue. All agreed, however, that the new rates involved increased cost to business houses, to whom lower rates for shorter distances were of liUle value. It was decided to send a telegram of pretest to the Alinister, and also to ask the Postmaster-General to make public the revenue derived from telegrams last year, and also publish an estimate of the sum which would have been received if the present charges were in force.
