VICTORIA COLLEGE

A COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY TO INVESTIGATE CHARGES The Victoria College Council, at its last monthly meeting, set up a committee to investigate certain charges or insinuations made in recent correspondence in the Wellington Press upon the staff of the college. The motion setting up the committee of inquiry, which was proposed by Professor T. A. Hunter, was as follows: —“That this council set up a committee to invite Mr. McCallum (the Hon. R. McCallum, L,M.C.), Canon James, the Welfare league, and other persons, to support the charge and insinuations made against the staff of the college.” At the meeting Mr McCallum objected to his name being mentioned and stated that he would not appear before the committee. The committee of inquiry —Messrs P. Levi, chairman, A. Fair, K.C., and H. A. Huggins—had a brief sitting yesterday in committee. It is understood- that the committee is treating any evidence that may be brought before it' as confidential, save as to the chairman of the Professorial Board and any person affected. • It is understood that Canon James and Mr. D. McLaren sent in written statements to the committee, and that Mr. A. P. Harper, representing the Welfare League, will give evid-

ence personally. After an hour and a half’s session yesterday, the committee adjourned until Tuesday evening.
