Mrs Cyril Williams, Atua, Otanc, who has been the guest of Mrs A. Hope, Timaru, has returned home.

Miss Carthew, of Feilding, will be the guest of Miss A. Rood, Waipukurau, and will compete in the ladies’ golf tournament, which commences tomorrow. /

Mr A. Hobson has been elected by the Napier Borough Council as its representative on the Hawke’s Bay Power Board, vice the late Mr Henry Hili. r

Miss Cynthia Wilson, of Bulls,flffnd Miss Nancy Grace, of Wanganui, are visitors to Waipukurau for the golf tournament which commences to-mor-row. and are the guests of the Misses Johnstone, Motuotaraia.

Professor Cecil Malthus, an old boy of Timaru Boys’ High School, and a graduate of Canterbury College, has been granted a Doctorate of Literature for a thesis, written in French, on the -influence of Shakespeare on the French dramatist, and poet, Alfred do Musset. Dr. Malthus is Professor of Modern Languages at Hobart University.

The death has occurred in the Napier Hospital of a member of a wellknown Wairarapa family, and an early resident of Greytown—Mr Hart Udy—at the age of 74 years. The late Mr Udy was born in Greytown and followed the calling of blacksmith there for many years. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. He is to he interred in the family plot at Greytown Cemetery to-day.

The death has occurred of Mr John Tinline Mowat, aged 70 years, known as The Kindly Giant, a member of a well-known Marlborough family and for the last two years honorary secretary of the Blenheim Relief of Distress Committee, also having full control of the relief depot. He was educated at Nelson College where he had a good athletic record, later representing Nelson and Marlborough at Rugby. For some years he worked at the Altimarlock family’s station and then visited ’ America, later being inspector of stock in the Falkland Islands.
