KICK FROM HORSE

CAUSES FARMER'S DEATH A WAIRARAPA SETTLER (Per Press Association) MASTERTON, This Day. As the result of a kick from a horse, Mr. Robert Oliver Smith, a well-known settler of “Earlyhurst,” Bideford, lost his life yesterday. His body was found down a steep bank where it had been dragged by the horse, deceased having been entangled in a rope on the horse. The late Mr. Smith, who had resided in the Masterton district for the past 30 years, was very highly respected and took a keen and active part in many district activities. He was a keen follower of sport and a great lover of horses and an expert horseman. In his youngei- days he rode in the show ring with considerable success. He was a steward of the Masterton Racing Club for a number of years. He was a very generous benefactor to St. Matthew’s Collegiate School for Girls, and had been a member of the Board of Governors of the school since 1917. In addition to being a very efficient farmer, he was a competent land and stock valuer. Mr. Smith leaves a widow and family. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
