Purging the 801 l In view of the close approach of c Municipal elections, the Borough Council is to meet on Tuesday, March 28, for the purpose of purging the roll. Roads in Good Order At the meeting of tho Borough Council last evening tho Mayor (Mr R. McLean) said that the roads in the borough had recently been inspected 4 and. were all in “tip-top” order. Legal Opinion Wanted Suggestions were made at yesterday’s meeting of the Napier Harbour Board that vessels should be compelled to work at the Breakwater, and it was decided that the board should, obtain a legal opinion as to its power in being able to exercise authority in that direction. Athletic Sportsmen., At tho athletic and cycling sports to be held in Hastings to-night, Waipukurau will be represented by M. . Yarwood and L. Cochrane in the 100,/ yds and 220 yds, and C. Stowe in the 880yds and 1 mile events. W. Carman and H. Nelson (Takapau) will represent the local club in the cycling sphere. Improvement to St. Mary’s Road. “The work on St. Mary’s road is nearing completion,” said the Borough overseer (Mr H. M. Tansley) in his report to the council last evening. “iThc sides are being built up to the level of the concrete water table, and when this is finished the road will be given a coating of screened river shingle. ” Will Not Stand for Mayoralty His definite decision not to accept nomination for election to mayoral office for the coining term was announced by the Mayor (Mr R. McLean) at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening. “My decision is absolutely final,” he said. “My reasons are quite simple, being that I consider I have done my part, and that time is quite ripe for another to take the position. lam quite sure there is sufficiently good material round the table to fill it ably. ’’ Revaluation of Borough The opinion that a revaluation of. tho property in tho Waipukurau Borough was urgently required was expressed at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening by Cr. W. A. Chambers, who stressed the fact, that there were numerous anomalies at. present. The borough had not been Valued since 1920, although the value of certain properties had since increased and of others decreased. He pointed out. also that if urban farm lands were revalued a heavier burden would be thrown on the rest of the ratepayers, unless a general revaluation were made. The Mayor (Mr R. McLean) and the councillors conc&rod with this view, and it was left to tho incoming council to take the matter up.
