A WORTHY APPEAL

H.B. CHILDREN’S HOME FOUNDED IN 1892 The Home founded in 18 92 by the late Mr. H. S. Tiffen is badly in need of funds to provide the necessaries of life for the children in the trustee’s care and in order to raise the sum of £l5OO an appeal will be made on Saturday, March 18th throughout the Hawke’s Bay province. Street collections will be held in all towns of Hawke’s Bay. In the country districts residents are asked to forward their donations direct to the treasurer. Some years ago the created an Endowment Fund and invested the monies on first mortgage securities. This was done with the idea tha't should the country experience bad times there would be some income available to provide food, etc. Unfortunately only a small part of the interest is now being paid so that the trustees foresight has not produceci the income at a time when it is badly needed. The sources of income of the Home are donations and Government subsidy thereon, income of the Endowment Fund and maintenance payments by relatives of children. Unfortunately all avenues of income have seriously declined. Donations have fallen away and the Government has reduced the subsidy very substantially, as already mentioned interest on investments is not coming in and maintenance payments are so small that it can be said they have almost disappeared. Under the circumstances the matter must be brought to the notice of the public to obtain what is necessary to carry on. It will be recognised the work of the trustees is essential and for the benefit of the district. Its social value is incalculable and for that reason alone must be maintained. Unfo I .lnnately there is a grave danger of still greater calls on the trustees to render assistance but this circumstance must be faced and it is confidently anticipated the people of this district will give the utmost assistance in their power so there may be no fear of lack of funds making it impossible to provide what is necessary for the children. Donations sent by post should be’* made payable to the H.B. Children’s Home and addressed to H. E. Edgley, treasurer. Church Street, (P.O. Box 145) Napier.
