Ormond and Miss J. Ormond motored to Wellington today to farewell Miss Kit Ormond, who is leaving on the Rotorua to-morrow for England. The Misses Bonn, Tong and Mavis Loan, and F. Sharpley, accompanied by Mr mid Mrs O. Tong, left Hastings by car yesterday morning for Wellington, on route to Christchurch to attend tho New Zealand amateur athletic championships. Mr F. J. Witherow, of Waipawa, received telegraphic advice yesterday of the sudden death, at Auckland, of his brother, Mr Tom ‘Withcrow, and leaves by the train this afternoon to attend tho funeral. The late Mr Withcrow was born at Patangata, but took up his residence in Auckland some years ago. He loaves, besides his widow, a family of four daughters and two sons, who will have tho sympathy of a. large circle of friends in their sudden bereavement. At the monthly meeting of the Waipawa branch of the H.B. War Relief Association on Monday afternoon the chairman (Mr Critchley) referred regretfully to the impending departure of Mr G*. Cooper, who, he said, had been a most useful member of the branch, in dealing with applications for assistance. The committee wished him prosperity and happiness in his new sphere. Tn acknowledgment Mr Cooper said he regretted in many respects having to leave Waipawa and the associations he had formed during his residence there. On the eve of their departure for South Africa a delightful theatre and supper party was given by Mr and Mrs Frank Brathwaite, of Johannesburg, to the members of their family they had come so far to visit. After enjoying the performance of Dame Sybil Thorndike in 1 ‘Madame Plays Nap” at Hastings tho party went on to tho Carlton Club Hotel, where the management had provided an excellent supper. The speeches which followed showed plainly the joy and pleasure of tho re-union. Mr Brathwaite is the fifth son of Mr and 'Mrs Robert Brathwaite, very well and favourably known in Hastings, and brother of Mr J. L. Brathwaite of Waipukurau. Tn a happy speech the host, standing beside his wife, proposed tho health of his parents and spoke with warmest appreciation and admiration of tho family’s upbringing —he looked back with pride to the fact that it was nearly 60 years since "the good work began” and ho thought this party of ' seventeen was convincing proof that tho memory of those years had brought them all together again, still a united and devoted family. Mr and Mrs Frank Brathwaite left for Auckland via Taupo—a party of seven accompanying them, to wish them bon voyage and all future prosperity.
