JAPS. OCCUPY JEHOL

Hold All Strategic Points CONFISCATION FOR THE POOR. POPPY GROWING ENCOURAGED By Telegraph —Copyright—Press Assn. SHANGHAI, Last Night. Though there will undoubtedly bo more lighting in the near future, in addition to skirmishing, there is lithe possibility of serious opposition to the Japanese, who hold all the strategic points in Jehol, reducing the defeated forces to complete helplessness. Although Peking remains quiet, the authorities have taken every precaution to prevent disorders. Martial law has been declared and all gates are heavily guarded and closed at nightfall. Almost all the Chinese, with the exception of General Sun Tien-ying s forces which defected with a considerable number of General Tang Yu-lin’s men, arc now within the Great Wall. However, the situation at Hhanhaikwan is pregnant with dire possibilities, as the Chinese are concentrating there in considerable strength, including two divisions of General Chiang Kai-shek’s forces. Kobe, illustrating the completeness of the preparations, has issued a communique which states that only one Japanese was killed and 30 injured in the whole of the Jehol campaign. The Manchukuo Government announces confiscations for the benefit of

the poor .and also the encouragement of poppy growing, guaranteeing a high price for opium for the financial rehabilitation of the province. Hitherto the Jehol Government’s opium production has been cited as the reason why it is worthy of deposition.
