GIRL’S SUICIDE

ATTRIBUTED TO A JOKE JUMP TO DEATH Acting under a sudden impulse, Stella Mary Gains, aged 22, of Frodshain road, Kelsall, near Chester, jumped from the bus. of which her lover was the conductor, after he had made a joking remark to her. The injuries she sustained proved fatal, and the circumstances were described later to the coroner. Mrs Gains, of Watling-street. Kelsall, had not sufficient, profit in her fishmonger’s business to keep her daughter at home. She therefore told. Stella she must go into service, but the girl objected and left homo shortly before the fatality occurred. Thomas Lightfoot, the girl’s sweetheart. explained that she accompanied him, and when, he took over the driving of the bus she sat beside him. “I cannot Love You” He called at Mrs Gains’s shop, and when he returned to the bus Stella upbraided him saying:— "Tom. the only thing I am living for is you. The family havQ all snubbed me and turned their backs on me, Tom, you cannot love me if you go there. ” “By that, Stella. I cannot love you.” he replied in a joking manner, and she added, “This is the end of everything. ” In an instant she jumped sideways, falling to the road, and the bus. travelling at 30 miles an hour, must have passed over her. The Coroner said it was clear that the girl jumped from the bus with the idea of injuring herself or killing herself.
