IN COLLISION

A Car Leaves Road

AND GOES OVER BANK

DRIVER AND LADY INJURED

As a result of being struck mid-on by a lorry carrying a picnic party comprising 57 members of the Herctaunga Swimming Club, a sedan car was forced over the bank on the Elsthorpe road a mile from the Waimarania bridge at about 10 o’clock yesterday morning, somersaulted and came to rest upon two trees, being so suspended above a shingle bed at the foot of the bank. The driver. Mr J. 0. Kelsey, of Hastings, and a passenger, Miss Beckett, suffered severe cuts and were removed to Royston Hospital. Last evening Mr Kelsey had so far recovered as to be able to return to his home, and the condition of Miss Beckett was causing no anxiety. No one in the picnic party was injured. The car was extensively damaged. The force of the collision was such as to throw the steering of the lorry out of control and the lorry proceeded on its way and in doing so pushed the car off the road and down the bank, which at this spot is over 20 feet high. The lorry itself came to rest half-way down the bank and half-way on the road and in such a manner as to make the road impassable to all but cars. The flriver of the lorry was Mr Walter White, of Hastings.

Although interrupted for a while by the mishap, the members of the picnic party wore later taken on by another lorry. Later in the day the position of tho Torry became a serious inconvenience to traffic returning to Hastings from picnics. cars only being barely able pass. A railway bus was held up with a party on board, and passengers had to wait for the despatch of another bus from Hastings. Upon its arrival they were transhipped and resumed tho journey to Tastings. Lorries, too, wore in many eases unable to pass, but in other cases driver were warned and took another road. Ata late hour last night efforts were being made to right tho lorry bv cutting away portion, of tho bank.
